New Fryston is one the communities left stranded by the collapse of the coal mining industry, its sense of place pulled out from underneath it.
When the nearby town of Castleford was chosen as the subject of a televised regeneration project, the publicity allowed the National Coalfields program run by English Partnerships to attract a high level of investment to New Fryston, and bring in designers and developers otherwise it might have been difficult to get hold of.
The bid to design the new village green was won by renowned landscape architect Martha Schwartz and finding out she’d finished work on a project pretty near our own doorstep we couldn’t resist going to have a look.
Its quite a suprise. No pop art stylings, no wry humour, vivid colours or geometry or any of the things you’d expect from Martha Schwartz instead its pretty restrained and at the same a bit cluttered. Hard to read at first its something you have to work at to understand properly - is that good or bad?
Fortunately, thanks to our diligent research, we can make out whats going on. All is revealed in the Plan section.
Most of the information there comes courtesy of English Partnerships.
