Firth Park - district centre |

|
Background Firth Park district centre lies at the bottom of a natural basin. Actually its a little more complex than that, but on most sides its surrounded by hills of varying gradients. Only to the east does the road lead down into a valley. This topography, along with the generous width and suggestive outlines of the pavements, gave rise to our central idea - that the roads pouring down and out of the basin were like rivers that had carved various shelves and bankings out of the surrounding landscape. In this context, the districts main feature - a traffic island - becomes, well, an island! Not that we arrived at this conclusion lightly! or without realising how we could tie it in with the patterns of movement and hesitation we wanted to encourage through the site. page under construction |
